Dimonis de les Illes Balears

26,00

A visual tour of 40 groups of demons or dimonis from the Balearic Islands.

This book is the result of photographer Pau Font’s desire to create a complete photographic archive of the groups of dimonis, festive elements, worshippers of fire and darkness, which form part of the popular culture of the Balearic Islands. You will find portraits of 40 groups outside their natural environment, the correfoc, taken with a simple black background that enables you to see the details and special features such as the costumes and masks. Differentiating elements that are often unpredictable when dimonis, dimonions and witches are in action, at night and surrounded by spires.

The photographs are accompanied by descriptions explaining the origin, legends and anecdotes of each group. You will find stories of brotherhood among its members and learn about the links with the villages and neighbourhoods that host them.

A unique account that shows the different ways of understanding and experiencing the correfocs in our territory. Because, as Martí Canyelles Crespí states in the introduction to the book: “The groups of dimonis are already part of the folklore of the Balearic Islands, along with the xeremies [a type of bagpipe native to the island of Majorca], the ball de bot [a series of traditional folk dances], the combats de gloses [glosa poetry competition], the corregudes de joies [traditional races]… A cultural and artistic heritage that is growing and that reaffirms us as a people in our own right, which we have to champion and pass on to the new generations”.
